E85: Is "Chief AI Officer" a Real Job or Window Dressing?

This week we cover a B2B agency’s acquisition of an Austin based design shop and Profounds $180M Series D

This week a ~50-person B2B agency in San Diego bought a sub-10-person design shop in Austin, and the headline wasn’t the deal, it was the title handed to the acquired founder: Chief AI Officer. Which forces the question: is Chief AI Officer a real job, or window dressing to announce “we’re an agentic agency now”?

Market update. Cinven, the London PE firm, closed its second strategic fund at ~$2.7B, 50% over target and 75% bigger than the last. They’ve now completed the Salsify acquisition, and paired with an earlier warehouse-management system investment, they clearly have a commerce thesis. Also, Stockholm based Fluencify raised a $4.3M pre-seed ($2M ARR, 13K creators, 85 countries). It’s the latest in a wave, after Levanta and Backyard, and the pattern is the money isn’t going into being a creator, it’s going into the infrastructure underneath creator commerce, the matching, measurement, and payment workflows, etc. The open question is whether there’s enough TAM for all of them.

Feature Deal” BOL acquires Brandcave.

BOL (Business Online) is a 28-year-old, ~50-person B2B demand-gen agency in San Diego. It acquired Brandcave, a small Austin product-and-design shop, and named founder Cody Miles its Chief AI Officer. Terms undisclosed.

Strategic Value: this is a capability-and-talent acquisition. A B2B demand-gen agency picking up design and product talent is an interesting add, and the framing, “run a services company with the agility of a software company”, is basically every agency’s B.H.A.G. in 2026. Same as Burson buying Limbic or Croud building agentic “Croudies”: pointed inward, to make the agency more competitive and efficient.

Deal Price: no price was made public, but from the outside this almost certainly reads as a cash-efficient, low-single-digit multiple with real equity upside for the founder, because you don’t hand someone a C-title unless you need them motivated for years.

Comms Strategy: Thad Kahlow appears to be a very a focused operator who, as far as I know, doesn’t take the banker calls (myself included have tried wearing my corp dev hat and not), and here he’s laser-pointed on the story of ‘agentic transformation of a 28-year-old business’ which is what it reads like between the lines.

PMI Risk: The real PMI risk isn’t the nine people getting lost, they won’t, in a business this size; they still get to see the impact of their work up front and close. It’s really about culture fit (San Diego meets Austin, and a 28-year-old shop’s institutionalized processes) and whether Cody can actually make the CAIO role visible over the next 18–24 months. Small money, big intent. Another smart tuck-in in the summer, now fall, of 500 deals.

Quick Deal Hits

  • Profound raised a $180M Series D at a $1.8B valuation (Sequoia, Kleiner), just seven months after its Series C, right as Jason Goldberg flagged that Google’s new Merchant Center AI insights give brands real user data, a quiet poke at Profound’s synthetic-prompt approach.

  • Adobe acqui-hired Rylo (India) for AI marketing agents.

  • H.I.G. Capital backed Click Here Digital as a regional agency roll-up platform.
